# Moving a role or circle to another circle

## Moving a role or circle to another circle
You move a role or a sub-circle from its own page in **Structure**, with **Move role** or **Move circle** in the **More actions** menu. Nothing changes on the chart when you confirm. The move travels as a governance proposal, and the role or circle appears under its new parent once that proposal is adopted.

## Who can move a role or a circle

In the interface, the action appears when you are a **decision maker** of the circle concerned:

- To move a **role**, you need to be a decision maker of the circle that holds it. This is the same gate as **Edit**, and being an organisation administrator is not enough on its own.
- To move a **circle**, you need to be a decision maker of the circle **above** it. Administrators and circle admins are shown the action as well, but the proposal is created in that parent circle and creating it there is decision-maker only, so an administrator holding no assignment in the parent circle sees **Move circle** and hits an error on submitting.

Two things follow from where the proposal is created:

- The **top-level circle** has nothing above it, so its page carries no **Move circle** at all.
- You need no rights in the destination. The move is decided by the decision makers of the circle the role or sub-circle sits in **today**.

## Move a role or a circle

1. Open the role or circle page from the chart, from a search result, or from the list of roles on its circle.
2. Click the three-dot **More actions** button in the page header, then **Move role** or **Move circle**.

![The More actions menu open on a role page called Product Manager, in the Product Development circle. Below Copy URL, Add member and Add stakeholder sits a group of four items: Edit, Mark as hiring, Move role and Extend role to a circle, with Delete last.](/images/structure-governance/how-to-move-a-role-or-circle-from-one-circle-to-another/01-role-more-actions-move-role.png)

3. Choose the destination under **Move to circle**. The list holds the circles of your organisation, minus its current parent. Type in the search box above it to narrow it down.
4. Optionally, fill in **Reason (optional)** to explain the move. It is carried on the proposal for the circle to read.
5. Choose how the move travels, using the buttons at the bottom of the dialog.

![The Move role dialog for the Product Manager role. Under the title it reads Move Product Manager to a different circle, this will create a governance proposal. A collapsed bar carries the role name, then a Move to circle label, a Search circles box and a list of six circles with Services ticked, then an optional Reason field. The footer offers Cancel, Save as proposal with a chevron beside it, and Submit.](/images/structure-governance/how-to-move-a-role-or-circle-from-one-circle-to-another/02-move-role-dialog.png)

The bar above the picker carries the name of what you are moving. Expand it to check the purpose, domains and accountabilities that travel with it. On a circle it lists what the circle holds instead.

## How the move travels

The dialog offers three ways out, the same three as the edit dialog:

- **Submit** creates the proposal and submits it to the circle in one step. The button reads **Validate** instead in a circle that sets its own auto-validation delay, and it does the same thing.
- **Save as proposal** keeps it as a draft. Use this when the reorganisation needs more than one change: you land on the proposal page and can add others before submitting.
- **Add to existing proposal**, in the arrow beside **Save as proposal**, attaches the move to one of your own drafts for the same circle.

All three take you to the proposal, never to a changed chart. Adopting the proposal is what moves the role or the circle, and when that happens depends on your organisation's **Proposal adoption** setting: see [Submitting and tracking a proposal](/structure-governance/how-to-submit-and-track-a-proposal).

> **Note:** On the proposal, a role move is listed as **Role invitation**. That badge is a mislabel, and the **From** and **To** circles shown under it are correct. A sub-circle move is listed as **Circle move**.

**Architect mode**, which administrators switch on from **Explore organisation**, moves a role or circle straight away with no proposal. It is paused on the full role and circle pages, so the route above always goes through a proposal.

## What travels with a circle

Choose a destination for a circle and the dialog tells you what else the move carries, under **If approved, this proposal will also move:** followed by the number of sub-circles, roles and members it holds. All of it moves with the circle, and nothing stays behind in the old parent.

![The Move circle dialog for the Services circle. Its description says the proposal is created in the current parent circle, General, and that only its decision makers can approve it. Product Development is ticked in the destination list, and below it a banner headed If approved, this proposal will also move lists 1 sub-circle, 3 roles and 2 members.](/images/structure-governance/how-to-move-a-role-or-circle-from-one-circle-to-another/03-move-circle-dialog-impact.png)

## Moving during a governance meeting

A meeting moves roles through the same mechanism, from a **Restructure a sub-circle** change added to a proposal on the agenda item you are processing: see [Restructuring a sub-circle in a governance meeting](/structure-governance/how-to-restructure-a-circle-in-governance-meetings).

That form reaches the direct sub-circles of the proposal's circle and nothing deeper, and it treats roles and sub-circles differently: a sub-circle can be moved **in**, never out. To take a sub-circle out of another sub-circle, use **Move circle** on its own page, as above.
