# Can I duplicate a circle?

## Can I duplicate a circle?
No. Talkspirit has no **Duplicate** action for a circle, and the form that creates one offers no way to copy an existing circle. A circle's three-dot menu offers **Copy URL**, **Assign member**, **Add role**, **Add sub-circle**, **Edit**, **Move circle**, **Settings** and **Delete**, and your rights decide how many of those you see. None of them copies the circle. If you used **Copy from existing circle** in Holaspirit, that is the button that has not come across.

Reuse happens one level down, on roles. A role definition travels between circles as a **role template**, and inside a single circle **Copy from existing role** gives you a second role modelled on one already there.

> **In summary:** create the new circle as usual, then add its roles from role templates. There is no one-click way to clone a whole circle.

Everything below goes through **Add role**, so you need to be a **decision maker** of the circle you are adding to. Everyone assigned to a circle is one by default, and being an organisation administrator does not grant it on its own. See [Decision makers in a circle](/structure-governance/what-is-a-decision-maker-of-a-circle).

## Main roles arrive on their own

A new circle is not always empty. It is created holding a copy of every role your organisation has marked as a **main role**, whichever way you created it. If your organisation has defined no main roles, the circle starts empty. See [Main roles and the Core badge](/structure-governance/understanding-core-roles).

## Reuse a role across circles: role templates

A role template is a named purpose, set of domains and set of accountabilities, stored at organisation level. It is the only way to copy a role definition into a different circle.

1. Open the circle that will hold the role, click the three dots at the end of its header, then select **Add role**.
2. The circle is already filled in. Click **Next**.
3. Under **From a model**, choose **Import role template**, then click **Next**.
4. Pick the template. **Name**, **Purpose**, **Domains** and **Accountabilities** fill in, and you can edit any of them before saving.
5. Continue through the proposal as you would for any new role.

Templates live in **Structure settings**, on the **Role templates** tab. That tab only appears if you may manage templates, so ask an administrator if you cannot see it. See [Role Templates Overview](/structure-governance/role-templates-overview).

## Copy a role inside a circle

**Copy from existing role** is the closest thing to a duplicate the product has, and it carries one limit worth knowing before you plan around it: **it only lists roles from the circle you are adding to**. It cannot pull a role in from another circle, so it will not help you rebuild one circle inside another.

1. Open the circle, click the three dots at the end of its header, and select **Add role**.
2. Click **Next**, choose **Copy from existing role**, then click **Next**.
3. Choose the source role in **Role to copy**.

![Step 3 of 3 of the Create role dialog for the Product Development circle. Role to copy is set to Product Manager, Name reads "Product Manager (copy)", and Purpose and Accountabilities are already filled in with the source role's wording.](/images/structure-governance/how-to-duplicate-a-circle/01-copy-from-existing-role.png)

The form fills in with the source role's **Purpose**, **Domains** and **Accountabilities**, and the name becomes the original followed by *(copy)*. Edit whatever you want, then continue through the proposal.

Those four fields are all that comes across. The members assigned to the source role, its attachments and any custom governance fields do not: the copy is a new, empty role that starts with the same wording.

## Sharing a role rather than copying it

If you want one role working in two circles instead of two separate roles, use **Invite a role**, offered on a proposal's page. It projects the role into the second circle rather than copying it, so the definition stays in one place. To take a role out of one circle and put it in another, use **Move role**. See [Moving a role or circle to another circle](/structure-governance/how-to-move-a-role-or-circle-from-one-circle-to-another).

## Building a circle like one you already have

1. Create the sub-circle from the circle that will contain it. See [Adding a role or a circle](/structure-governance/how-to-add-a-role-or-a-circle).
2. **Assign the first member.** A circle created through an adopted proposal arrives with no members at all, so nobody is a decision maker of it yet and **Add role** does not appear on it. Open its **Members** tab and assign someone before you go further. A circle created directly in Architect mode does not have this problem, because whoever created it becomes a member and a Circle Admin of it.
3. Add each role, importing a template where one exists and creating the role from scratch where it does not.

If you build similar circles often, the time is best spent once, on turning their shared roles into templates. Every circle you create afterwards then starts with the main roles already in place.
