# Viewing your roles and circles

## Viewing your roles and circles

The quickest list of your own roles is **My circles & roles**, a section that sits permanently in the left panel of the Structure module. For the fuller picture, including how much of your time each role takes and which circles you administer, open the **Roles** tab of your member profile.

One note on wording. Your organisation can rename circle, role, purpose and the other governance words under **Administration > Terminology**, so if your organisation calls a circle a squad, read "squad" throughout. The defaults are used here.

## My circles & roles

Open the **Structure** app from the navigation rail. The panel on the left starts with **My organisation**, and **My circles & roles** sits directly under it.

It lists every circle you belong to, in alphabetical order. A circle with a chevron beside it holds roles of yours: click the chevron to unfold them, and your roles appear one level under, also in alphabetical order. Click any circle or role to open its page.

Two things to expect. The section shows your circles only, so a parent circle you do not belong to is not drawn, and the tree is two levels deep rather than a full hierarchy. And which circles you left unfolded is remembered in your browser, not on your account, so another computer opens them collapsed.

If you hold nothing at all, the section reads **No roles or circles assigned**.

## The Roles tab on your profile

Open the **Members** app, find yourself in the list, and open your profile. **Roles** is the first tab and the one Talkspirit opens on.

- **Current roles** groups your role cards under the circle each one belongs to. A card carries the role name, its purpose, and your scope when one has been set. Click the name to open the role.
- An **Admin** badge on a card means you are an administrator of that circle. This is the only screen that gathers your circle-admin status across every circle at once.
- **Time spent in roles** draws a coloured bar above the cards, one segment per role, with an **Over-allocated** badge if the segments add up to past 100%. It appears only once someone has recorded your allocations.
- **No role in the circle** lists, at the bottom, the circles you belong to without holding a role in them.
- **Roles history** runs down the right-hand side: every assignment, removal, election and scope change, with a **Filter** control for type and year.

## On the Cockpit, the chart and the directory

The **Cockpit** carries a **My circles and roles** card that counts your circles and roles, then devotes one panel to each circle, listing your roles there under **Your roles**. **Explore the structure** on that card opens the chart.

The chart itself, on **Structure > Explore organisation**, marks nothing as yours until you ask it to. Open **Filter** at the top right and switch on the **My roles** and **My circles** quick filters. The **Highlight** control beside it will not do this for you either: no view ships with the product, so it opens on **No views** until you or an administrator creates one. See [Managing chart custom views](/structure-governance/how-to-manage-chart-custom-views).

The **Circles & roles directory** offers the same two quick filters, where they narrow the table instead of the canvas.

## Circles where you hold no role

Belonging to a circle without holding a role in it is a normal state. The circle still appears in **My circles & roles** and under **No role in the circle** on your profile, and the circle's own **Members** tab lists you with **No roles** in the Roles column.

It also carries rights. Everyone added to a circle becomes a **decision maker** of it unless somebody switches that off, and decision makers can create roles and raise proposals in the circle. Your profile does not show this, but the circle's **Members** tab does: it prints **Non-Decision Maker** beside anyone whose flag has been switched off.
