# Send your personal tasks to Todoist

> **In summary:** Todoist is a personal integration. You enable it for yourself from **Profile & Preferences**, on the **General** page, under **Integrations**. Only tasks that belong to you alone are sent: a task created on no project, with you as its only assignee. The task is marked done in Talkspirit as soon as it is created, and it lands in your Todoist **Inbox** about a minute later, with its title and its description. A **Test** button lets you check the connection.

This guide covers Todoist. The other personal tool, OmniFocus, follows the same rules: see [Send your personal tasks to OmniFocus](/integrations/send-your-personal-tasks-to-omnifocus).

## A personal integration

The connection belongs to you, not to a circle or a project. Nobody else can enable Todoist for you or disable it, administrators included.

You can hold one personal tool at a time: Todoist or OmniFocus. While one is enabled, **Enable** on the other is unavailable, and its tooltip says: *Only one personal integration at a time: disable OmniFocus first.*

## Enable Todoist

1. Open your profile menu, then **Profile & Preferences**. The **General** page opens.
2. Under **Integrations**, on the **Todoist** row, select **Enable**.
3. A dialog asks **Confirm activation?** Select **Enable**.
4. Todoist asks you to sign in and approve access. Approve it.
5. You come back to Talkspirit. The row reads **Connected** and says: *All new personal tasks are sent to Todoist.*

To stop, select **Disable** on the row, then confirm. Tasks already sent stay in Todoist.

## Test the connection

While the row reads **Connected**, select **Test**. Talkspirit sends one task titled `Talkspirit connection test (safe to delete)` to your Todoist **Inbox**, and the row says: *A test task was sent to your Todoist Inbox. You can delete it.* No task is created in Talkspirit.

- The test task's title is in English, whatever your language.
- If it cannot be delivered, the row says: *The test task could not be delivered to Todoist. Try again later.* A refusal from Todoist counts as it would for a real task: if access was withdrawn, the row reads **Interrupted** and **Reconnect** replaces **Test**.
- After a test, wait 30 seconds before selecting **Test** again. A second press within 30 seconds sends nothing, and the row shows the same *could not be delivered* message.

## Which tasks are sent

A task is sent when it is created, if all of the following are true:

- it is on no project;
- it is not a subtask;
- you are its only assignee.

A copy of such a task, made with its assignees, and each new occurrence of a recurring task that keeps you as its only assignee, count as created tasks: they are sent too.

| The task | Sent to your Todoist? |
| --- | --- |
| Created on no project, assigned to you alone | Yes |
| A copy of such a task, with its assignees | Yes |
| The next occurrence of such a recurring task, with you as its only assignee | Yes |
| Created on no project, assigned to you and someone else | No |
| Created on no project, with no assignee | No |
| Created on no project, assigned to another member alone | No. It goes to that member's personal tool, if they enabled one. |
| Created on a project | No. A project has its own integrations. |
| A subtask | No |
| Created before you enabled Todoist | No |
| Assigned to you alone after it was created | No. Only a task's creation is sent. |
| Updated or deleted after it was sent | No. Todoist is not updated. |

What counts is the assignee, not the author: a task another member creates and assigns to you alone reaches your Todoist. A circle or a role set on the task does not count as an assignee. A private task is sent too, since you are its only reader in Todoist.

## What Todoist receives

| In Talkspirit | In Todoist |
| --- | --- |
| The task's title | The task's name |
| The task's description | The task's description, as plain text |

The task lands in your **Inbox**. Nothing else is sent: no Todoist project to choose, no assignee and no due date.

> **Important:** Todoist reads the title as it would a task you typed yourself. A title such as `Call Bob tomorrow` gets a due date in Todoist, and `#Project` or `@label` in a title are read the same way.

## The hand-off

Talkspirit marks the task done as soon as it is created, as it does for a task handed to a project's project tool. At the top of the task, it shows *This task continues in Todoist.* The task becomes read-only in Talkspirit, and it can no longer be reopened. The work continues in Todoist.

The task reaches Todoist about a minute later: Talkspirit groups integration events for one minute before sending them. Once Todoist has it, an **Open in Todoist** link at the top of the task leads to the task in Todoist.

If the send fails, the task goes back to to-do in Talkspirit: the banner disappears and the task can be edited again. It is not sent again.

## When sending stops

When sending stops, the row reads **Interrupted**, and an alert titled **Sending was interrupted** says why.

| The alert says | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| *Access to Todoist was withdrawn.* | Todoist refused a task, for example because you removed the access in Todoist. The integration stopped at once. | Select **Reconnect** and approve access again. |
| *5 deliveries failed in a row.* | Todoist could not be reached five times in a row. | Select **Reconnect**, or **Disable** the integration. |
| *Todoist refused our own credentials.* | A fault on Talkspirit's side. | Nothing you change here fixes it. Contact Talkspirit support. |

Tasks created while sending was interrupted are not sent later. When Todoist only asks to slow down, sending is not interrupted.

Disabling Todoist removes the connection from Talkspirit, but Todoist still lists the access you granted. Remove it in your Todoist settings if you no longer want it.

## What’s next?

- [Send your personal tasks to OmniFocus](/integrations/send-your-personal-tasks-to-omnifocus): the other personal tool, fed by email through your Mail Drop address.
- [Connect a project to a project tool](/integrations/connect-a-project-to-a-project-tool): the same hand-off for the tasks of a project, to Trello, Asana, Jira or Basecamp.
- [Circle and project integrations](/integrations/circle-and-project-integrations-overview): what a circle or a project sends to a chat tool, and reading the card.
