# Connect a project to Trello

> **In summary:** open the project’s settings, then the **Integrations** tab, and select **Connect** on the **Trello** card. Trello asks you to allow Talkspirit on its own page. Back on the project, choose a **Board** and a **List**, then **Confirm destination**. Each new task becomes a card in that list, with its title, its description as plain text, and its assignees found on the Trello board.

This guide covers Trello. How the hand-off works, which tasks are sent and why a project holds one project tool at a time is the same for every tool: see [Connect a project to a project tool](/integrations/connect-a-project-to-a-project-tool).

## Before you start

- You are an **owner or editor** of the project in Talkspirit.
- You have a Trello account that can add cards to the list you want. Every card is created with this account.
- The project is not connected to another project tool. If it is, disconnect that one first.

## Connect the project

1. Open the project’s settings, then the **Integrations** tab.
2. On the **Trello** card, select **Connect**.
3. Trello opens its authorisation page for **Talkspirit**. Sign in if asked, review the access requested (read and write on your Trello account), and allow it.
4. You return to the project. The card reads **Choose a destination**.
5. Choose the **Board**, then the **List**, and select **Confirm destination**.

The card reads **Connected** and names the destination as *Board → List*.

The authorisation does not expire. It stays valid until you withdraw it in Trello or disconnect the project.

## The destination

| Level | What you choose |
| --- | --- |
| **Board** | A Trello board your account can open. Closed boards are not offered. |
| **List** | A list of that board. Archived lists are not offered. A Trello card always belongs to a list. |

To send tasks somewhere else, select **Change destination**. No new authorisation is needed.

## What a card carries

| Card field | Filled with |
| --- | --- |
| Name | The task's title |
| Description | The task's description, as plain text: bold, links and lists lose their formatting, their text is kept |
| Members | The task's assignees found on the Trello board, see below |
| Due date | Nothing |

The card does not link back to the Talkspirit task. Once Trello confirms the card, the task is marked done in Talkspirit and shows an **Open in Trello** link to the card.

## How assignees are added

Talkspirit looks each assignee up among the members of the Trello board, by **name**: the member's name in Talkspirit must be exactly the full name shown in Trello. Case, accents and spaces count.

- An assignee who is found is added to the card as a member.
- An assignee who is not found is written at the end of the card's description, on a line starting with `Members:`, for example `Members: Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing`.
- If two members of the Trello board share the same name, the first one Trello lists is added.
- If Trello does not return the Trello board's members, nobody is added: every name goes into the description, and the card is still created.
- A role or a circle assigned to the task is not sent.

## When cards are not created

When sending stops, the card on the project reads **Interrupted** and an alert says why and what to do: see [Connect a project to a project tool](/integrations/connect-a-project-to-a-project-tool).

| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The card reads **Interrupted**: *Access to Trello was withdrawn.* | The authorisation was withdrawn in Trello | **Disconnect** Trello and connect it again |
| The card reads **Interrupted**: *5 deliveries failed in a row.* | Trello refused five cards in a row, for example because your account can no longer add cards to the list | **Change destination** and choose the list again, or disconnect Trello and connect it again |
| One task was not marked done, the next ones were | Trello was busy and refused that one request | Create that card by hand. The following tasks are not affected |
| A name appears after `Members:` in the description | That assignee's name does not match a member of the Trello board exactly | Add the person to the card in Trello |
| **Connect** cannot be selected | Another project tool is connected to the project | Its tooltip names it: disconnect it first |

Tasks created while sending was interrupted are not sent later.
