# Connect a circle or a project to Slack

## Connect a circle or a project to Slack

A circle can be connected to one Slack channel. Once it is, what happens in the circle is posted there: a role created or moved, a member assigned, a policy published, a proposal adopted, a tension raised, a meeting finished, a goal updated. A project can be connected the same way for its tasks. From Slack, a member can ask who holds a role or who a person is in the organisation, and vote on a proposal without opening Talkspirit.

> **In summary:** open the circle's settings, then the **Integrations** tab, and click **Enable** on the Slack card. Slack asks you to choose a workspace and a channel, then sends you back to Talkspirit with the card reading **Connected**. Choose what to send with the four switches. For a project, the same card sits in the project's settings.

## Before you start

- **You must administer the circle.** The Integrations tab, and every action on it, is limited to circle administrators, the same permission that lets you rename the circle or set a decision maker. For a project, you need access to the project's settings.
- **You must be an administrator of your Slack workspace.** Slack only lets workspace administrators install an app, and connecting a circle installs the Talkspirit app in your workspace.
- **Tagging roles from Slack needs a paid Slack plan.** Talkspirit mirrors each role as a Slack user group, and user groups do not exist on Slack's free plan. Notifications work on any plan.
- **Delivery takes one to three minutes.** A notification is queued, then posted. Do not judge the connection broken because a message has not appeared within seconds.

## Connect a circle

1. Open **Structure** and go to the circle.
2. Open the circle's settings, then click the **Integrations** tab.
3. On the **Slack** card, click **Enable**. Slack opens its own consent screen.
4. Choose the Slack workspace, then the channel the notifications should go to, and allow the installation.
5. Slack sends you back to the Integrations tab. The card now reads **Connected**, names the workspace and the channel, and Talkspirit posts a confirmation message in that channel straight away.

![The Integrations tab of a circle's settings. The Slack card reads "Send governance notifications from this circle to a Slack channel", with an Enable button, a Setup guide link, and two prerequisites under "Before you start": being an administrator of the Slack workspace, and a paid Slack plan for tagging roles.](/images/integrations/connect-a-circle-or-a-project-to-slack/01-circle-integrations-tab.png)

You can choose a public or a private channel. For a public channel nothing else is needed. For a private channel, Talkspirit adds its bot to the channel during the connection, using your own Slack membership of that channel. If Slack refuses that, the confirmation message tells you at once, and typing `/invite @Talkspirit` in the channel completes the job.

If you allowed the installation without choosing a channel, the card reads **No channel** and nothing can be delivered. Click **Reconnect** and pick one.

## Choose what to send

Once connected, the card shows four switches under **What to send**. All four are on when you connect.

| Switch | What it posts |
| --- | --- |
| **Assignments** | Members assigned to or removed from roles and circles |
| **Governance** | Changes to roles, circles, policies, proposals and tensions |
| **Meetings** | Meetings scheduled and meeting reports published |
| **Goals** | Goals owned by this circle, with their metrics and checklists |

Each switch saves on its own. A message carries a link back to the item in Talkspirit, so a reader in Slack lands on the right role, proposal or meeting.

## Connect a project

A project is connected separately from any circle, because a project does not have to belong to one.

1. Open **Projects** and go to the project.
2. Open the project's settings and find the **Slack** card among the notification integrations.
3. Click **Enable**, choose the workspace and the channel on Slack's consent screen, and allow the installation.

A project sends one kind of notification, **Tasks**: tasks created or deleted on the project, and changes to their status, priority or due date. No paid Slack plan is needed for a project.

## Use Talkspirit from Slack

Two things work from inside the connected channel.

- **Ask who someone is, or who holds a role.** Type `/talkspirit @Jane Doe` to see the person's roles and circles, or `/talkspirit @Secretary` with a role's user group to see who holds it. Pick the name from Slack's autocomplete: the command needs a real mention, and a name typed as plain text is not looked up.
- **Vote on a proposal.** When a proposal is posted to the channel, its message carries the vote actions, so you can answer from Slack.

Role mentions rely on the Slack user groups Talkspirit keeps in step with your roles, which is the part that needs a paid Slack plan. If your plan has none, the card says so and notifications carry on regardless.

## Check that it works

- **Test** posts a real message to the channel, so you can confirm delivery without waiting for a governance event.
- The badge on the card tells you the state. **Connected** means delivery is healthy. **Not delivering** means Slack accepted the connection but refuses the messages, and the card says why and what to do. **Interrupted** means several deliveries failed in a row and sending has stopped. **No channel** means the installation completed without a channel.
- The usual fixes are named on the card: the bot is not in the channel, so type `/invite @Talkspirit` there; the channel was archived or deleted, so **Reconnect** and choose another; Talkspirit's authorisation was withdrawn in Slack, so **Reconnect**. A successful test brings an interrupted connection back to **Connected**.

## Disconnect

Click **Disable** on the card, then confirm with **Disconnect**. The app is removed from your Slack workspace, the circle stops sending anything to it, and the channel and the switch settings are deleted. Connecting again starts from scratch.
