# Implementing Goals in your organisation

## Implementing Goals in your organisation
Rolling out Goals works best in three cadences: annual goals for the whole organisation, quarterly goals for each team, and regular check-ins in between. Start with the company goals, let each circle derive its own from them, then keep progress current. In Talkspirit a goal pairs a short, motivating title with key results, and each key result carries a starting value and a target value that show how close you are.

## What carries the cadence in the product?

Three fields on every goal do the work of a rollout plan. The **Category** places a goal at Company, Team, or Individual level. The **Time period** sets the window it spans, and your organisation defines those periods in **Goal settings > Time periods**. The **Owner** can be a member, a circle, or a role, so a quarterly goal can belong to a team rather than to one person. The rest of this article is the rhythm you build on top of those three fields.

## When should you use Goals?

Goals work best when applied across three cadences:

| Cadence | Rhythm | What you set |
|---|---|---|
| **Strategic** | Annual | Goals in the **Company** category for the organisation and its largest units |
| **Tactical** | Quarterly | Goals in the **Team** category for each circle, with a review at the midpoint |
| **Follow-through** | Every one or two weeks | Check-ins on key results, so progress and confidence stay current |

### Reviewing Goals in meetings

You can put goals in front of a circle at its regular meeting in two ways:

- Add a **Goals** section to a meeting agenda template. The section lists the goals and key results of the meeting's participants automatically. The **Strategic Review** system template already includes one.
- Open a goal and choose **Bring to a meeting** to attach that single goal to an upcoming agenda.

**Note:** The **Tactical Meeting** system template does not include a Goals section. It reviews metrics, checklists and agenda items. Add a Goals section to your own copy of the template if you want goals reviewed at every tactical meeting.

## How do I roll out Goals step by step?

A typical rollout follows this sequence:

1. Create the organisation's annual goals in the **Company** category, and gather feedback on them before the period starts.
2. Ask each circle to create its own goals in the **Team** category for the coming quarter.
3. Link each team goal to the company goal it supports, so it appears as a sub-goal and feeds the parent's progress.
4. Give every goal an owner, a time period, and the key results that will measure it. Two or three per goal is usually enough to stay focused.
5. Set a starting value and a target value on each key result, so progress is measurable from day one.
6. Hold check-ins every one or two weeks. Each check-in records a new value, a confidence level of High, Medium or Low, and an optional comment.
7. At the midpoint of the period, review each goal's status of **On track**, **At risk** or **Blocked**, and adjust what is no longer realistic.
8. At the end of the period, close the goals, open **Goal settings > Statistics** to see completion rates and the spread of goals by status and health, then plan the next period.

**Note:** Your organisation can restrict which categories a member may create, so creating Company goals may be reserved for administrators or for specific roles. If the **Company** category is not offered when you add a goal, ask an administrator.

## What helps a rollout succeed?

- **Know your baseline.** Identify the current measurement before you choose a target value. A key result with no starting value cannot show progress.
- **Start small.** One goal per circle in the first period establishes focus and gives everyone a clear priority.
- **Keep the rhythm.** Planning and reviewing goals takes real time. Start the next period's planning before the current one ends.
- **Check in on a schedule, not on demand.** A short check-in every two weeks surfaces blockers while there is still time to act.
- **Use Goals to communicate.** Keep goals public so every member can see how their work connects to the organisation's direction.
- **Stay flexible.** Adjusting a goal partway through a period is normal, and better than tracking one that no longer matters.
- **Brief new members** on how your organisation uses goals before they create their first one.
- **Review what you learned** at the end of each period, and carry one improvement into the next.
