# Creating a company goal

## Creating a company goal
A company goal is a goal whose **Category** is set to **Company**, the top level of the three categories the Goals module uses: Company, Team and Individual. Choosing Company marks the goal as organisation-wide, groups it under **Company Goals** in the List and Timeline views, and gives it a building icon in the **Category** column. Only administrators can choose it.

This article covers the category. For the mechanics of creating, editing and deleting any goal, see [Adding, editing, or deleting a Goal](/goals-analytics/how-to-add-edit-or-delete-a-goal).

---

## Who can create a company goal?

You need administrator rights. Administrators can create goals in all three categories. Members are limited to **Team** and **Individual**, and guest accounts cannot create goals at all.

Before you start, make sure your organisation has at least one active time period, because every goal requires one. Administrators define them in **Goal settings**, on the **Time periods** tab. See [Managing Goal time periods for my organisation](/goals-analytics/manage-goal-time-periods).

---

## How do I create a company goal?

1. Open the **Goals** app.
2. Select **Add goal**, at the top right of the Goals list.

3. Enter a **Title**.
4. Choose an **Owner**: a member, a role or a circle.
5. Choose a **Time period**.
6. Set **Category** to **Company**.

7. Add a **Parent goal**, a **Description**, a **Privacy** setting and a **Status** if you need them.
8. Select **Create**.

**Note:** Category defaults to **Team**, so a company goal always needs this one deliberate change. You can change the category later from **Edit goal**.

---

## How do I find the company goals in my organisation?

Every goal shows its category in the **Category** column of the List view, so a company goal is recognisable at a glance. To see them together:

1. Open the **Goals** app in the **List** or **Timeline** view.
2. Select **Group**, then **Category**.

The goals split into **Company Goals**, **Team Goals** and **Individual Goals**, in that order, with a count beside each heading. To hide everything else instead, use **Filter**, add a **Category** filter and select **Company**.

---

## How do company goals connect to team and individual goals?

The category on its own creates no link. Alignment comes from the **Parent goal** field: a goal sits under whichever goal you name as its parent, and the **Hierarchy** view draws that tree.

To make a team goal roll up to a company goal, open the team goal and set the company goal as its **Parent goal**. You can also work downwards: open the company goal and select **Add sub-goal**.

Progress then rolls up the tree. Use **Progress driver** on the parent goal to decide whether its progress comes from its own key results, from its sub-goals, or from both.
