# Assigning responsibility for a key result

## Assigning responsibility for a key result

A key result in Talkspirit has no assignee of its own. Responsibility sits on the goal that holds it: every goal names one **Owner**, and everyone else who takes part is added through **Share**, with a permission level. Granting someone **Update progress** is what allows them to record check-ins on that goal's key results, which is how individual contribution becomes visible.

## Where does responsibility for a key result live?

Responsibility is set once, on the goal, and every key result inside it follows. A key result carries a title, a target, a current value and a weight, and nothing that names a person. There is no per-key-result member picker to look for.

Two settings on the goal do the work:

- **Owner** says whose outcome this is. Choose a circle when a team carries it, a role when a specific responsibility carries it, or a member when it is personal. Everyone in the owning circle or role gets full rights on the goal, including the right to change who else has access.
- **Share** says who else takes part, and what each of them may do.

---

## How do I give someone responsibility for a key result?

You need **Full access** on the goal, or to belong to the circle or role that owns it, before you can change who has access.

1. Open **Goals** and select the goal that holds the key result.
2. Select **More actions** at the top right of the goal, then **Share**.
3. Type at least three characters in **Select members, circles, or roles to invite**. Results arrive grouped under **Members**, **Circles** and **Roles**, each row carrying a badge for its type.
4. Select the person you want, then **Invite**. They join the **Who has access** list at **View only**, the least permissive level.
5. Select **View only** next to their name, then choose **Update progress**.

The same menu is where you change or withdraw responsibility later. It also holds **Remove**, which takes the person off the goal entirely.

**Note:** Your organisation can rename circles and roles, so those two group headings may read differently for you.

---

## What does each permission level allow?

| Level | What the person can do |
|---|---|
| **View only** | Open the goal and read its key results, progress and comments. |
| **Update progress** | Record check-ins on the goal's key results, so they report the numbers they are responsible for. |
| **Full access** | Work on the goal itself: edit it, add and remove key results, and manage who has access. |

A goal set to **Everyone in the organisation (Public)** is already readable by every member, so **Share** is about who contributes, not who can see.

---

## How does the person know a key result is theirs?

Three things happen once you grant **Update progress**:

- They are notified that you assigned them to the goal. Members can turn this off under **Notifications** in their account preferences, so treat the notification as a courtesy, not a briefing.
- The goal appears in their **My goals** panel, under **Assigned to me**.
- When one of its key results is due an update, it appears in the **Key Results to update** section of the same panel. That section is hidden when nothing is waiting, so an empty panel means they are up to date.

To report progress, they select **Update Progress** (the plus icon) at the end of the key result row, enter the new value, set a **Confidence Level** and add an optional **Comment**, then **Save Check-in**.

---

## Where can I see what happened?

Each key result keeps its own record. Select **More actions** on the key result row, then **View History**, to open **Progress History**: every check-in on that key result, in order.

The goal's own **Activity** tab, in the **Discussion** panel, records changes to the goal itself: when it was created, updated, archived or deleted, and by whom. Changes to who has access are not listed there, so use **Share** to see who takes part today.
