# Use the unread mode

The unread mode adds an **Unread** tab to your Newsfeed so you can see the posts you have not yet read. When it is enabled, your Newsfeed shows two tabs, **All posts** and **Unread**, and new activities are marked as read by you rather than automatically. The **Unread** tab lists the posts you have not read, grouped by their group, so you can catch up group by group.

## How do I turn on the unread mode?

1. Open the user menu and select **Profile and preferences**.
2. Go to the **General** section.
3. Under the **Unread mode** setting, turn on **Enable unread mode**.

Your Newsfeed now shows the **All posts** and **Unread** tabs.

## How do I mark posts as read?

Open the **Unread** tab in your Newsfeed. Posts are grouped by their group, and a count next to each group name shows how many unread posts it holds. Your private posts appear under **Private posts**.

To mark a whole group as read, select **Mark as read** next to its name. Those posts leave the **Unread** tab. To clear every group at once, select **Mark all as read** at the top of the Newsfeed.

> **Note:** You cannot mark a single post as read on its own. Marking as read always applies to every post in the group at once.

## What are the benefits of the unread mode?

The unread mode helps you track new posts without a notification for every activity. You decide when a group's posts count as read, so nothing is marked read until you have seen it.
