# Project notifications

## Project notifications
Projects notifies you about nine events, from a task landing on your name to a whole project being archived. Every one of them arrives switched on, on both channels, so this page is mainly a map of what already reaches you. You change any of it in **Account** > **Notifications** > **Projects**.

## The nine events, and who receives each one

| Event | Fires when | Who is notified |
|---|---|---|
| **Task Assignment** | Someone puts you on a task | The new assignee. If the task is assigned to a role rather than to a person, every holder of that role |
| **Task Unassignment** | Someone takes you off a task | The person removed, or every holder of the role removed |
| **Task Comment Mention** | Someone mentions you in a comment | Everyone named in the comment: each person mentioned, every holder of a mentioned role, and every member of a mentioned circle |
| **Task Completed** | A task you are assigned to is completed | The task's other assignees |
| **Sub-task Completed** | A sub-task is completed | The sub-task's assignees, plus the assignees of its parent task |
| **Task Archived** | A task you are assigned to is archived | The task's other assignees |
| **Project Archived** | A project is archived | Every member of that project |
| **Metric Assignment** | Someone puts you on a metric | The assignee only |
| **Metric Value Due** | A metric value is due for the period | Everyone assigned to the metric, plus its owner when the owner is a person |

The two metric rows only appear if your organisation displays Metrics. If it does not, you see seven rows instead of nine.

## Email and Desktop are not what you might expect

**Desktop** covers the notification bell in the top bar, not only a pop-up from your computer. Switching Desktop off for an event removes it from the bell as well, so the notification stops existing anywhere in the app.

Projects is also one of only two apps, with Structure, whose notifications can raise a pop-up from your computer on top of the bell entry. Goals and Meetings show the same **Enable desktop notifications** switch but never pop up. The pop-up additionally needs your browser's permission to show notifications.

**Email** is unavailable for the two metric rows: their Email cell shows a dash instead of a switch, and metric notifications only ever reach the bell.

> **Note:** You are never notified about something you did yourself. That is what the asterisk beside each event name means, and it applies to every row: complete your own task, archive your own project, mention yourself in your own comment, and nothing is sent.

## One mention switch covers far more than tasks

**Task Comment Mention** is labelled and described as mentions on a task, and that is the trap. The same single switch also governs mentions in comments on a **project**, a **goal**, a **key result** and a **metric**. The bell says so when the notification arrives: it reads "Mentioned in a comment on a goal", for example, even though the only control for it sits under Projects and calls itself a task setting.

So if you want to stop being pulled into goal or key result discussions, this Projects row is the switch, and there is no equivalent row on the Goals tab. Equally, switching it off is broader than it looks and silences all five.

Mentioning a role or a circle notifies everyone in it, which is the fastest way to send one comment to a dozen people by accident.

## What Projects does not notify you about

Four gaps are worth knowing before you go looking for a control that is not there.

- **A comment on your task that does not mention you.** Comments only notify the people they name. There is no "someone commented on your task" event.
- **Anything about a task's dates or position.** Moving a task to another column, giving it a due date, or a deadline approaching sends nothing.
- **Being added to a project.** You are told when a project is archived, never when you join one.
- **Assignments to anything other than a person or a role.** Assigning a task to a circle, a group or an external contact notifies nobody, even though the interface accepts it.

## Where to change your settings

Two routes reach the same page. From **Account** > **Notifications**, select the **Projects** tab. From inside Projects, open **Project settings** at the bottom of the sidebar and choose **Notifications**, which lands on the Projects tab directly.

The tab only appears if you can open Projects at all. For how the page as a whole works, including the global channel switches and the other three tabs, see the settings article below.
