# Inserting emojis in Talkspirit


You can add emojis to chat messages, posts, and comments. In a chat message or a comment, click the smiley icon in the composer and choose an emoji from the picker. In a post, type a colon (`:`) followed by the emoji's name, then select the emoji from the list that appears.

## How do I add an emoji with the smiley icon?

In a chat message or a comment, click the **smiley icon** in the composer. The emoji picker opens. Select an emoji to insert it, or type a name in the search field to filter the list.

## How do I add an emoji to a post?

A post has no smiley icon. Type a colon (`:`) followed by the emoji's name, then select the emoji from the list that appears. You can also open the insert menu with a forward slash (`/`) and choose **Emoji**.

## Can I type emoji codes?

In posts and comments, type a colon (`:`) followed by an emoji's shortcode, such as `:smile:`, and it is replaced with the matching emoji. As you type, the picker suggests matching emojis, so you do not need to remember every code.

> **Note:** GIFs are separate from emojis. Administrators can allow or block GIFs in chat in the Chats app settings.
