# Following a circle you are not a member of

Following a circle sends you its news without making you a member of it. From **Account** > **Notifications** > **Circles**, the **Followed circles** table lists every circle you follow, with one box per kind of notification: **Meeting reports**, **Meetings** and **Evolutions**. You can only follow what a circle shares with the whole organisation: a circle that keeps all its content to its members shows a padlock in the **Follow a circle** list and cannot be followed.

> **Note:** The **Circles** tab appears when you can open the Structure module. Your organisation may have renamed circles; the tab and the table carry the name it uses.

## What following gives you

Each ticked box subscribes you to one kind of notification about the circle:

- **Meeting reports**: the report of a meeting of the circle, when it is published. Only reports visible to the whole organisation reach followers.
- **Meetings**: a notice when a meeting of the circle is scheduled, changed or cancelled. It is a notice, not an invitation, and it covers public meetings only.
- **Evolutions**: a proposal opened in the circle, a proposal adopted, and a working agreement published.

The **Assignments** column shows a dash on a followed circle: assignment notifications only reach the circle's members.

Following decides which circles you hear from, not how. The email and desktop switches of the matching event, on the **Structure** and **Meetings** tabs of the same page, still decide whether a notification reaches your inbox, the notification bell, or neither. If both channels are off for an event, following a circle brings you nothing for that event.

## Who can follow which circle

A circle's **Visibility** tab, in its settings, decides what can be followed:

- **Operations visibility** set to **All organisation members** opens **Meeting reports** and **Meetings** to followers.
- **Attachments & agreements visibility** set to **All organisation members** opens **Evolutions** to followers.

A kind the circle keeps to **Circle members only** is locked: its box is greyed out with a padlock, and the footnote **This circle keeps this content to its members** explains why. When all three kinds are locked, the circle appears with a padlock in the **Follow a circle** list and cannot be selected; hovering it shows **This circle keeps all its content to its members**. Organisation administrators and the circle's circle admins change these settings, see [Setting a circle to private](/en/structure-governance/how-do-i-set-my-circle-private).

Circles you belong to are listed above, under **Your circles**, where the same boxes mute notifications instead of subscribing to them. A circle never appears in both tables.

## Follow a circle

1. Click your profile picture, then open **Account**.
2. Select **Notifications** in the left-hand panel, then the **Circles** tab.
3. Under **Followed circles**, click **Follow a circle**.
4. Search for the circle and select it. Circles you already follow or belong to are not listed.
5. Tick the other boxes you want.

The circle joins the table with its first open box ticked, **Meeting reports** when the circle shares them, and the message **You now follow [circle]** confirms it. Every change to a box saves on its own, confirmed by **Notification preferences saved**.

You can also follow a circle from the **Meetings** tab: the **Meeting report published** row lists the circles whose reports you receive, with its own **Follow a circle** button. A follow made there asks for meeting reports only.

## Stop following a circle

- Click **Unfollow** at the end of the row. The message **You no longer follow [circle]** confirms it.
- Or untick its last ticked box. Since a follow with nothing ticked is an unfollow, the dialog **Stop following [circle]?** asks first: confirm with **Unfollow** or keep it with **Cancel**.

If a circle restricts content you follow after you followed it, the notifications stop. The box stays ticked until you untick it, and it cannot be ticked again while the restriction lasts.
