# Using hashtags

## Using hashtags

You can use hashtags to organise posts around keywords. Type **#** before a keyword in a post or a comment: the keyword is recorded as a hashtag, and the newsfeed search finds every post that carries it.

> **In summary:** Type **#** followed by a keyword in a post or comment to create a hashtag. To find tagged content, open the newsfeed search bar, pick the **#** hashtag filter, and choose or type the keyword.

## Create a hashtag

Type **#** followed by your keyword directly in:

- the body of a post,
- a comment.

Keep the keyword to a single word made of letters (accents included) and digits. A hashtag stops at the first space or punctuation mark, so apostrophes, hyphens and underscores cut it short: typing #l'équipe records the hashtag #l.

On older posts and comments, hashtags show as clickable links that open the newsfeed search for that keyword. In the current post editor the keyword stays as plain text, so use the search bar to find tagged content.

## Find content by hashtag

1. Click the search bar at the top of the newsfeed.
2. Pick the **#** **hashtag** filter in the list of search options, or type **#** directly.
3. Talkspirit suggests existing hashtags as you type. Choose one, or finish typing the keyword, and press **Enter**.

The results list every post you have access to that carries the hashtag, in the post itself or in its comments, most recent first.

## Good to know

- The suggestion list covers every hashtag created in your organisation, even when it comes from posts you cannot access.
- Search results only include posts you can see: posts in your groups, posts in open groups and your own posts. Guests only get results from groups they belong to.
- Hashtags are free-text keywords that anyone can invent. For a colour-coded set that each group manages itself, use labels instead (see [Working with labels](/communication/working-with-labels)).
- To keep your hashtag usage consistent, reuse existing keywords rather than creating slight variations of the same word.

## Who can use hashtags?

Hashtags need no setup and no specific rights: anyone who can publish a post or a comment can create them, and every member can search for them.
