# What is a groups administrator?

## What is a groups administrator?

A groups administrator is a member an organisation administrator appoints to run group administration for the whole organisation. The delegation grants the two classic administration screens, **Manage groups** and **Groups settings**, and with them the creation, modification and deletion of every group, plus the power to appoint group managers in each. It is distinct from the group manager, who runs a single group; see [What is a group manager?](/en/communication/the-group-manager).

> **In summary:** an organisation administrator appoints groups administrators in classic Talkspirit, under **Administration**, **Groups settings**, **Groups administrators**. Those people then hold group administration over every group in the organisation, without full administrator rights.

## Groups administrator and group manager compared

| **Groups administrator** | **Group manager** |
| --- | --- |
| Organisation-wide: the same rights over every group. | Per group: rights only in the groups they manage. |
| Sees every group, open, private, secret or archived, in **Administration** then **Manage groups**. | Sees the groups directory like any member: open and private groups, plus the secret groups they belong to. |
| Can create groups from **Manage groups** whatever the creation rules say. | Can create groups from the directory when the organisation's creation rules allow it. |
| Can appoint group managers in any group, including themselves via **Become group manager**. | Can promote members of their own group with **Make group manager**. |
| Is not necessarily a member of the groups they administer. | Is always a member of the groups they manage. |
| Reads content only in the groups they have joined. | Reads everything shared in the groups they manage. |

Deleted groups appear nowhere: deletion is permanent, for administrators too.

For a tour of what the two screens contain, see [Manage all groups as an administrator](/en/administration-security/managing-groups).

## How do I appoint a groups administrator?

Only an organisation administrator can appoint or remove groups administrators, and only in classic Talkspirit.

1. Click **Groups** in the navigation rail. Classic Talkspirit opens.
2. Select **Administration** in the sidebar, then **Groups settings** under **Groups**.
3. Under **Groups administrators**, search for and select the members to appoint.
4. Save.

Only members appear in the picker: organisation administrators are not offered, because they already hold every group right.

To revoke the delegation, remove the person from the same list and save.

## What the new Administration console shows

Nothing. **Administration** then **Groups** in the new interface is a read-only inventory: it can neither grant the delegation nor show who holds it. The rights themselves keep working for everyone appointed before or after migration, so appoint and audit groups administrators in classic Talkspirit. The same pattern applies to [User administrator permissions](/en/administration-security/the-user-administrator).
