# What is a group manager?

## What is a group manager?

A group manager is a member with extra rights over one specific group. The role is granted per group: managing one group gives you no power over any other. It is distinct from the groups administrator, an organisation-wide delegation that covers every group; see [What is a groups administrator?](/en/communication/the-groups-administrator).

> **In summary:** a group manager runs one group from that group's own **Settings** panel: information and privacy, permissions, members, enabled apps, integrations, archiving and deletion.

Older documentation sometimes calls this role the group administrator. The interface says **group manager** everywhere, and this article follows the interface.

## What a group manager can do

Open the group and click the **Settings** cog on the right side of the page. Managers of the group see:

- **Information & privacy**: the group's title, description, topic, cover image and privacy level.
- **Manage permissions**: who can post, who can comment, who can pin a comment, who can add and remove members, who can add or delete integrations, who can set up labels, and who can manage or bulk-edit drive files.
- **Manage enabled apps**: which of Newsfeed, Chat, Drive, Calendar and Projects the group uses.
- **Integrations**: connect services to the group.
- **Archive this group** and **Delete this group**.

Two things are worth knowing before you look for a permission switch:

- Most questions in **Manage permissions** appear only if the organisation allows groups to override its defaults. A missing switch is expected, not a bug: an organisation administrator decides what is overridable in [the organisation-wide defaults for groups](/en/communication/modifying-default-privileges-for-groups).
- The privacy levels a manager can pick from follow the organisation's group-creation rules, unless the manager is also an organisation administrator or a groups administrator.

## Who becomes a group manager?

- The member who creates a group is its manager automatically.
- A manager can promote any member of the group: open the group's member list and choose **Make group manager** on that person. The same menu offers **Make member** to hand the role back. Guests cannot be made group managers.
- Organisation administrators and groups administrators can take the role from **Administration** then **Manage groups**, with the **Become group manager** row action. It appears on open groups and on groups they are already a member of, and once they hold the role the same entry reads **Revoke my rights and leave group**.

You cannot demote or remove a group's last manager from the member list. If a group ends up with no manager anyway, administrators see a red warning on it in **Manage groups**: **This group has no manager.**

## The group's chat room

A group's chat room follows the **Chat** app. Enable Chat in **Manage enabled apps** and the group's room appears in Chats for its members; disable it and the room is removed. See [Managing enabled apps on a group](/en/communication/manage-enabled-apps-on-the-groups).

## Find the groups you manage

1. Click **Groups** in the navigation rail. Classic Talkspirit opens on the groups directory.
2. Click **Groups I manage** in the icon bar at the top right of the page.

The list narrows to the groups where you hold the role.
