# Managing group labels

## Managing group labels
Group labels are colour-coded keywords you attach to posts in a group's newsfeed to mark a status or a stage, such as "In progress" or "Decision". Each group has its own set of labels, and anyone in the group can click a label to filter the newsfeed down to the posts that carry it.

> **In summary:** Open the group, click the **Labels** (tag) icon in the panel on the right, then create, edit or delete labels. By default every group member can do this; administrators can restrict it to group managers.

## Who can manage labels

By default, every member of a group can create, edit and delete its labels. Two settings change this:

- A platform administrator sets the rule for the whole organisation in **Administration** → **Groups settings**, under **Manage labels in groups**: **Only group managers** or **Allow all group members (including guests)**.
- A group manager can adjust the rule for one group under the group's **Settings** panel → **Manage permissions** → **Set who can setup labels**. This control only appears when the administrator has also switched on **Allow group managers to overwrite this permission** in Groups settings. That switch is off by default, so if the control is missing from your group's permissions, that is the expected state, not a fault.

Labels belong to the Newsfeed module: if the Newsfeed module is disabled in a group, that group has no **Labels** panel.

## Add labels

1. Open the group and click the **Labels** icon (a tag) in the panel on the right. The icon only appears if you are allowed to manage labels in this group.
2. Click **New label**.
3. In the **Create labels** window, pick a colour and type a name (30 characters maximum).
4. To create several labels in one go, click **Add label** and fill in the extra rows.
5. Click **Create**.

## Edit or delete a label

In the **Labels** panel, next to each label:

- Click the **Edit color** (eye-dropper) icon to reopen the label in the **Edit label** window, change its name or colour, then click **Update**.
- Click the **Delete** (bin) icon, then confirm with **Delete**.

> **Warning:** Deleting a label is permanent, and the label is removed from every post it was attached to.

## Label a post and filter the newsfeed

Every group member can use the labels that already exist, whatever the management rule. Clicking a label chip on a post opens the label panel, and selecting a label inside the panel filters the feed to the posts carrying it. The full use side, from labelling a post to filtering, is covered in [Working with labels](/en/communication/working-with-labels).
