# Group topics

## Group topics

Group topics in Talkspirit are categories that classify the groups of your organisation. When groups are assigned to topics, the groups directory and the navigation sidebar display groups sorted by topic, so members find the right group faster. Creating topics requires administrator rights or the groups administrator delegation.

## How do I create and manage group topics?

1. Go to **Administration** and click **Manage groups** in the **Groups** section.
2. Open the **Topics** tab.
3. Type a name in the **Topic title** field and click **Add**.

From the same tab you can rename a topic, delete it with the trash icon, and use the search field under each topic to choose which groups belong to it.

A "Topic title" field sits next to a greyed-out Add button, and below it one existing topic, "Departments", with a trash icon on its right and a "Select groups..." search field underneath for attaching groups to it.](/images/communication/groups-topics/01-manage-groups-topics-tab.png)

## How do I assign a topic to a group?

Once topics exist, a group can be assigned to a topic in two ways:

- From the **Topics** tab of **Manage groups**: use the group search field under a topic to attach groups to it.
- From the group itself: group managers can open the group's settings panel, click **Information & privacy**, and choose a topic in the **Topic** dropdown. The same dropdown appears when creating a group.

The **Topic** dropdown is only visible once at least one topic has been created.

## How do groups appear when topics are assigned?

In the groups directory, groups are listed under a heading for each topic, and groups without a topic appear under **Others**. When you search the directory, results are sorted by relevance instead of topic.

In the navigation sidebar, groups are also sorted by topic. Each member can turn this off for their own sidebar in **Preferences → General**, with the **Enable groups topics** switch.
