# Group projects

## Group projects

A group project is a project board that belongs to one of your groups. It lives in the **Projects** app, next to your personal projects, and it has one of two levels of visibility: **open**, which every group member can access, or **private**, which works by invitation only.

> **Role prerequisite:** Only that group's managers can create a project for a group. Guests cannot create projects.

Two things must already be in place:

- A platform administrator has activated the Projects module for the organisation. See [Activating the Projects module](/en/collaboration/how-to-activate-projects).
- A group manager has enabled the **Projects** app on the group itself. See [Manage enabled apps on the groups](/en/communication/manage-enabled-apps-on-the-groups).

## How do I create a group project?

1. Open the **Projects** app. From inside the group, you can click the **Projects** button in the group header.
2. Click **New**.
3. Select **Group project**.
4. Enter a **Name** and select the **Group**. The list only shows groups you manage that have the Projects module enabled.
5. Under **Privacy**, choose **An open project is available to all the group members** or **A private project is available to its members only**.
6. Click **Create**.

## What are open group projects?

All members of the linked group can access an open group project without an invitation. They appear in the project's member list as **Group member** and cannot be removed from it. In groups of 1,000 members or more you cannot create an open project: create a private one instead.

You can also share an open project with people outside the group:

1. Open the project and click the add-member icon next to the member avatars, at the top right of the board.
2. In the **Project members** window, search for the people to add, then click **Save**.

People added this way are listed as **Invitee**. They only see this one project: they do not gain access to the group's Newsfeed, Chat, Drive or to its other projects. Invite them separately to each project they need.

## What are private group projects?

A private group project is visible to its members only. Even group members need an invitation to see it. When you create one, you are its **Owner** and its only member. Add everyone else, from inside or outside the group, through the same **Project members** window: click the add-member icon at the top right of the board, select the people, then click **Save**.

It explains that invited users will only have access to this board in the group, offers an Add users field, and lists a single row, the person who created the project, labelled Owner](/images/communication/group-projects/02-project-members.png)

Inviting is not reserved to the owner: any member of the group, except guests, can add and remove project members. The owner is the one person who cannot be removed from the project.
