# Creating a group

## Creating a group

Groups in Talkspirit are shared spaces where a team, a project or a community shares posts, files and conversations. You create a group in two short steps: describe it and set its privacy, then choose its purpose and apps.

> **In summary:** On the **Groups** page, click **Create new group**, fill in the title and privacy, click **Next**, choose a purpose and the apps to enable, then click **Create**.

## Who can create a group?

By default, all members can create groups. Administrators can change this separately for each privacy level: in **Administration** > **Groups settings**, under **Create groups**, the right to create open, private and secret groups is either **Allow all members** or **Administrators and groups administrators only**. Guests can never create groups.

In the creation form, privacy levels you cannot use are greyed out. If no privacy level is open to you, ask an administrator, or see [The Groups Administrator](/en/communication/the-groups-administrator) to learn how this right is delegated.

## Step 1: describe the group

1. Go to **Groups** in the navigation and click **Create new group**.

2. Fill in the **Title** (required) and, if you wish, a **Description**.
3. If your organisation has defined group topics, select a **Topic**.
4. Under **Privacy**, select a level:
   - An **open** group is accessible to all members.
   - A **private** group is accessible to its members only. Users can request access or be invited.
   - A **secret** group is a private group that is invisible to non-members. It does not appear in the groups list, and access requests are disabled.
5. Pick a **Cover picture**, or upload your own (960 x 443 px), then click **Next**.

## Step 2: choose the purpose and apps

1. Select a **Purpose**: **Sharing of information**, **Team work**, **Thematic** or **Other**. Your choice pre-selects the apps below, and you can adjust them.
2. Under **Apps**, switch **Newsfeed**, **Chats**, **Drives**, **Calendar** and **Projects** on or off. Only the apps activated on your organisation appear.
3. Click **Create**.

The group opens on its About page. You are its first member and its group manager, so you can invite members right away. If a message tells you that your organisation has reached the maximum number of groups allowed by its subscription plan, contact an administrator.

## Creating a group from the administration

Administrators and groups administrators can also create groups from **Administration** > **Manage groups**: click **Create group**, then follow the same two steps.
