# Creating a chat conversation with yourself

You can start a chat conversation with yourself in the Chat module, the same way you start a conversation with another member: select your own name as the recipient. This personal conversation works as a private notepad. Use it to keep quick notes, draft messages before sending them elsewhere, and send files to yourself so they are available on every device where you sign in to Talkspirit.

## How do I create the conversation?

1. Open the **Chat** app.
2. Click **New**.
3. In the **To:** field, type your own name.
4. Select yourself from the results. Your name appears with the label **(you)**.
5. Write and send your first message. The conversation is created and stays in your conversation list.

Messages you send in this conversation never trigger a notification and are always marked as read.

## How do I share files between my devices?

Send a file to yourself and it is available in this conversation on every device where you sign in to Talkspirit. Take a photo on your phone, send it to yourself, and retrieve it on your computer. The same applies to documents, videos, and voice messages. On a computer, you can also drag and drop files into the conversation to send them.

## How do I draft messages?

You can write a formatted message in your personal conversation and check the result before sending it to the right person or room. Chat formatting uses markdown syntax, for example `**text**` for bold: send the message to yourself to see it rendered, adjust the source text, then copy the final version across. The full syntax is listed in [Formatting chat messages](/en/communication/formatting-messages).
