# Using the checklist feature

## Using the checklist feature
A checklist is an attachment you add to a post in the Newsfeed. It turns the post into an actionable to-do list: each item can be ticked off and assigned to members, and the post displays a completion percentage to everyone who can see it. Checklists are part of the Newsfeed module, which is included in the Standard, Premium and Business plans.

Checklists live inside posts. To organise work with boards, due dates and task tracking, use the group's [Projects module](/collaboration/the-projects-app) instead.

## How do I create a checklist?

You can create a checklist in two ways:

- Click the **Create a new checklist** button at the top of the Newsfeed, from the general Newsfeed or from a group.
- Create a post first, then click the **Checklist** button in the composer's attachment options.

Once the checklist editor is open:

1. Add a recipient, a title, and the content of your post.
2. Give the checklist a title and add its items. Press Enter to add the next item, or paste a multi-line text to create several items at once. There is no limit to the number of checklists per post.
3. Click **Publish**.

Once published, the post shows a progress bar and a completion percentage that update as items are ticked.

## Who can check off an item?

Any member of the group who can see the post can tick or untick any item, not only the person assigned to it. If you open the post without being a member of its group, a message asks you to join the group before you can participate.

On an archived post, the checklist is locked and can no longer be changed.

## How do I assign checklist items?

Click the assignment icon to the right of a checklist item to assign it to a member, before or after publishing. Only recipients of the post can be assigned, and assignees receive a notification (bell or email, depending on their preferences). For the full walkthrough, see [Assigning users](/en/communication/assigning-users).

## What are the best practices for checklists?

- When you tick an item, leave a comment to update the group: no automatic notification is sent when an item is ticked or unticked.
- Pin the post in the group to keep the team's progress visible and easy to find. Only group managers can pin a post.
