# Assigning users

## Assigning users

Assign a user to a post or a checklist item when you expect an action from them. The assignee receives a bell notification straight away, and an email if their preferences allow it. You can also assign yourself to keep track of posts that still need your attention.

> **In summary:** Anyone who can see a post can assign or unassign users on it, and only people who can see the post can be assigned. Assignments work before or after publishing, on the post itself and on each checklist item.

## How do I assign a user to a post?

### Before publishing

1. While writing your post, open the **Assignments** tab below the editor.
2. Click the **+** button next to **Assign to**.
3. Select the person to assign. The list only offers people who will see the post.

If you mention people in your draft, the tab also lists them under **Assign mentioned users**, so you can turn a mention into an assignment with one click.

### After publishing

Click the **+** button at the bottom of the post, then choose **Assign users** to open the **Assigned to** area, or **Assign myself** to add yourself in one click.

Once a post has assignees, their profile pictures appear on it next to **Assigned to**. To unassign someone, click their profile picture, then click **Unassign user**. To remove yourself, choose **Unassign myself** in the **+** menu. Nobody is notified when they are unassigned.

> **Note:** If a selected person cannot see the post, Talkspirit does not create the assignment. Assignments cannot be changed on an archived post, and when a member leaves a group, their assignments on that group's posts are removed automatically.

## How do I assign a user to a checklist item?

Click the assignment icon to the right of the checklist item and select the person to assign. This works in the editor before publishing and on the published post. Assignees appear as small profile pictures next to the item.

To create the checklist itself, see [Using the checklist feature](/en/communication/checklist).

## How do I find assignments?

### Your own assignments

Click the person icon (**Assigned to me**) at the top right of the news feed to show only the posts assigned to you. Click it again to clear the filter.

### Another user's assignments

In the news feed search bar, select **assignee:** and enter the user's name to find all posts assigned to them.

In list view, a small person icon marks posts that have assignees.

## How do I manage assignment notifications?

The bell notification is always sent, except when you assign yourself.

You control the email: open **Profile and preferences**, select **Notifications**, and scroll to **Emails notifications**. The switch *you are assigned in a post* enables or disables the email, and it is on by default.
