# Manage sections in a Kanban project board

A project board groups its tasks into **sections**, which appear as the columns of the **Board** view. You add, rename, recolour, reorder, and archive these sections from the board itself, and your changes apply to the board for everyone who can see it.

## Prerequisites

Managing sections requires the board's **Owner** or **Admin** role, and the board must not be archived. A board owner or admin can also turn section management off for a board through its **Allow section creation** setting, which is on by default.

## Add a section

1. Scroll to the end of the board's columns.
2. Click **Add section**.
3. Type a name in the **Enter section name** field, then press Enter.

## Rename a section

Click the section name at the top of its column, type the new name, and press Enter.

## Change a section's colour, icon, or status

Open the section's three-dots menu (**Section options**) at the top of its column. The menu holds the colour, icon, and linked-status options below.

### Set a colour

Point to **Colour**, then pick a swatch, choose a custom colour, or select **None** to clear it.

### Set an icon

Point to **Icon**, then choose an icon, or **None** to remove it.

### Link a status

Point to **Linked status**, then choose **To do** or **Done**. A task moved into the section then takes that status automatically, and setting a task to that status moves it into the section. Choose **None** to unlink. A linked status replaces the section's icon.

## Reorder sections and tasks

### Reorder sections

Drag a section by the handle above its name to a new position. Reordering is available when the board uses its manual order, with no sort applied.

### Order tasks within a section

Open **Section options**, point to **Order tasks by**, and choose **Priority**, **Due date**, **Assignee**, **Label**, or **Title**, then pick **Ascending** or **Descending**. This is a one-time reorder that keeps the new task positions, and it is available when the board is not sorted.

## Archive a section

1. Open **Section options**.
2. Click **Archive section**.
3. Confirm in the dialog.

The section and all its tasks move to the archive. You restore them later from the board menu's **Archived items**.
