# Using Events in Talkspirit

A Talkspirit event is a type of contribution defined by a date and one or more participants. It appears in the **Calendar**, reached from the main navigation. Who can see an event follows the privacy of the group it is posted to, or the list of members it is shared with. You can colour-code your calendars and export your events to Google Calendar, iCal, or Outlook through a feed URL.

To create an event, see [Using the Talkspirit Agenda](/en/collaboration/calendar).

## What is an event?

An event is a dated contribution with participants. Each event has a title, a start and end (or an all-day flag), and optional content, location, and a video meeting link. Events can repeat on a recurrence, and you can request answers so participants respond **Yes**, **Maybe**, or **No**.

Every event belongs to a calendar: your own, a group's, or one of the anniversary calendars. Open the Calendar from the main navigation to see your events in **Week**, **Month**, or **Year** view.

## Who can see an event?

An event's visibility follows the recipient you post it to.

| Recipient | Who can see the event | Who can take part |
|---|---|---|
| An open group | Everyone in your organisation | Group members only |
| A private group (closed or secret) | Group members only | Group members only |
| Specific members | The members you select | The members you select |

When an event is not posted to a group, you can switch on **Make this event private** so that only its participants can see it.

## How are events colour-coded?

Each event takes the colour of the calendar it belongs to, so events from different calendars are easy to tell apart. To change a calendar's colour, open its actions menu in the Calendar sidebar and pick a colour under **Colors**. Your own calendar, each group's calendar, and the anniversary calendars each carry their own colour.

## How do I export my events to an external calendar?

You can subscribe an external calendar application to a private feed of your Talkspirit events.

1. In the Calendar sidebar, open the actions menu on your own calendar.
2. Select **Export my calendar**.
3. In the **iCalendar synchronization** dialog, click **Enable feed**.
4. Copy the feed URL.
5. Add the URL as a subscribed calendar in your application.

The feed URL carries your Talkspirit events. You can add it to:

- [Google Calendar](https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/37100)
- [iCal](https://support.apple.com/kb/PH11523)
- [Outlook](https://support.office.com/en-us/article/View-and-subscribe-to-Internet-Calendars-f6248506-e144-4508-b658-c838b6067597)

> **Note:** The **Synchronize calendar** button connects Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook for two-way synchronisation, when your organisation has enabled it. To share a read-only feed of your events instead, use **Export my calendar** as described above.
