# User badges

## User badges

A user badge is a coloured marker an administrator grants to a handful of members so that what they write carries visible weight. It shows on their profile picture in Newsfeed posts, Chat messages and Library pages. Create it and give it to people in classic Talkspirit, under **Administration > Manage users > Badges**.

A badge is not the **Admin**, **Member** or **Guest** label you see beside a name in the member list. Those report the account role and nobody grants them one at a time. See [User Roles and Permissions](/en/administration-security/user-roles) for those.

You need organisation administrator or user administrator rights.

## Create a badge and grant it

1. In classic Talkspirit, open **Administration** and go to **Manage users**.
2. Select the **Badges** tab.
3. Click **New badge**.
4. Type a **Name**, and choose a colour from the swatch beside the name field.
5. Under **Users**, use **Select users** to pick the people who should carry it.
6. Click **Save**.

Three limits shape how you use badges, and the screen enforces all three:

- An organisation holds at most **20 badges**. Delete one before adding another.
- A badge is granted to at most **50 users**.
- A person carries **one badge at a time**. Someone who already has one is offered as unavailable when you build the list for a second.

Grant badges sparingly. Their whole value is that few people have one.

## Where a badge shows

Once granted, the badge sits on the member's profile picture in the Newsfeed, in Chat and on Library pages, and it names itself when a reader hovers over it. Posts that member writes in the Newsfeed also carry a band in the badge's colour, so their contributions read differently in a busy feed.

Badges are decorative, not a permission. Granting one changes nothing about what that person may see or do. You cannot search or filter the member directory by badge.

## The Badges tab in the new Administration

The new Administration console has its own **Badges** tab under **People > Users**. Treat it as read-only for now: it lists a name, a colour and a creation date, and there is no way to grant a badge to anyone from it.

Do the work in classic Talkspirit instead. A badge created in the new console does not appear on the classic Badges screen, so it cannot be granted to anyone and it will not reach the Newsfeed.
