# User administrator permissions

## User administrator permissions

A user administrator is a member you appoint to run people administration on your behalf: they invite, edit, suspend and anonymise members without holding full administrator rights. The delegation is real and the server enforces it, but it lives entirely in **classic Talkspirit**. The new Administration console can neither grant it nor display it, so if your organisation appointed user administrators before migrating, those people still hold the rights and nothing in **Administration > Users** will tell you so.

> **In summary:** an organisation administrator appoints user administrators in classic Talkspirit, under **Administration > Users settings > Users administrators**. Those people then get the three **Users** screens of that same classic administration, and nothing else.

## Where the role is granted

Only an organisation administrator can appoint or remove a user administrator, and only in classic Talkspirit.

1. Open one of the classic apps from the navigation rail: **Newsfeed**, **Chat**, **Calendar**, **Groups**, **Drive** or **Library**.
2. Select **Administration** in that app's sidebar.
3. Under **Users**, select **Users settings**, then the **Users administrators** tab.
4. Add people in **Select administrators**, then save.

The **Users administrators** tab is visible to organisation administrators only. A user administrator who opens the same **Users settings** page sees **Profile information** and **User attributes** and no third tab, so they can neither appoint anyone nor check who else holds the right.

## What a user administrator can do

The delegation grants the three **Users** entries of the classic administration, in full.

### The three screens

| Screen | What it covers |
|---|---|
| **Manage users** | Create a member, edit any profile, **Suspend**, **Suspend and anonymize**, **Anonymize**, restore an account, **Make it guest** and **Make it member**, reset one person's password or expire every password, update people in bulk from a spreadsheet |
| **Manage invitations** | Invite members and guests, resend or delete a pending invitation, **See access code** for people invited without an email address |
| **Users settings** | Profile information and user attributes, including the fields you have locked for everyone else |

The right also reaches a few places outside those screens. A user administrator manages user badges, manages people sets and the dynamic groups built on them, and assigns people to newsfeed groups both at invitation time and in bulk, whatever a group's own membership permission says. Exporting the full member list, or exporting suspended accounts, is also reserved to organisation and user administrators: anyone else can export only a group they administer.

## What stays with organisation administrators

- Appointing or removing any delegated administrator, including this one.
- Making someone an administrator or revoking administrator rights. **Grant to admin privileges** and **Revoke admin privileges** appear only for organisation administrators, and the whole action menu is disabled when the person in the row is already an administrator.
- Every other area of administration: organisation settings, security, authentication, statistics, billing, groups administration, the homepage, the newsletter and the library. Several of those carry their own separate delegation.
- The new Administration console. A user administrator who is otherwise a plain member cannot open it at all, because it is reserved to the **Administrator** account role.

## How it differs from the Administrator role

**Administrator** is an account role, one of three, and it carries every right on everything. User administrator is not a role: it is a list of people attached to your organisation's configuration, and it carries one department of rights. Someone can be a member on paper and a user administrator in practice, which is what makes the delegation easy to lose track of.

> **Note:** because the new interface has no screen for it, an audit of who administers your people has to be done in classic Talkspirit. Open the **Users administrators** tab whenever you review access.
