# Enabling the Knowledge Base for Spark

The Knowledge Base is the content Spark draws on to answer questions about your organisation. When an administrator enables it, Spark grounds its replies in the documents you upload and in your governance structure, rather than answering from general knowledge alone. It is an organisation-wide setting: every member's Spark draws on the same indexed content, and there is no separate per-member Knowledge Base.

## Before you start

You need administrator rights. The Knowledge Base feeds Spark, so Spark must be on first: if the AI assistant is still off, the **Enable Knowledge Base** button stays disabled and prompts you to enable the AI assistant first. To turn Spark on, follow [Enabling Spark for my organisation](/administration-security/how-to-enable-spark-for-your-organisation).

## How do I enable the Knowledge Base?

1. Go to **Administration**.
2. In the **General settings** group, select **AI assistant**.
3. Open the **Knowledge base** tab.
4. On the **Settings** tab, select **Enable Knowledge Base**.

Once it is on, the **Organisation Knowledge** tab lets you create datasets and upload documents in PDF, DOCX, Markdown, HTML, and TXT.

## What does the Knowledge Base hold?

Two kinds of content feed Spark once the Knowledge Base is on:

- **Documents you upload**, organised into datasets under **Organisation Knowledge**, within your organisation's storage quota.
- **Governance content, indexed automatically**: your roles and circles are kept in sync, and adopted proposals, published meeting summaries, active goals, and working agreements are indexed on a nightly schedule.

Spark searches this indexed content when a member asks a question and uses the matching passages to ground its answer. What Talkspirit stores and which provider processes it is covered in [How Spark processes your organisation's data](/administration-security/how-ai-processes-your-data).

## How do I disable the Knowledge Base?

Disabling lives in the **Danger zone** on the **Settings** tab. Select **Disable Knowledge Base**, then type `disable` in the confirmation dialog to unlock the action.

> **Warning:** Disabling permanently deletes every uploaded document, dataset, embedding, and the indexed copies of your governance content. The source records (your roles, circles, proposals, meetings, and goals) are not deleted, but Spark stops using any of this content until you enable the Knowledge Base again. This cannot be undone.
